Van der Wiel vs. Ftacnik

Van der Wiel vs. Ftacnik
Arhus 1983
Sicilian Defense, Najdorf Poisoned Pawn
1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Qb6 8 Qd2 Qxb2 9 Rb1 Qa3 10 Be2
After 10 Be2
This line against the Poisoned Pawn suddenly materialized in the early 1980s. After initial successes, antidotes were found and it is now rarely seen. 10…Be7 11 0-0  Nc6? Black has a number of playable lines, including 11…h6, 11…Qc5, 11…Nbd7 and 11…Qa5, but this isn’t one of them. 12 Nxc6 bxc6 13 e5! dxe5 14 fxe5 Qc5+ 15 Kh1 Qxe5 16 Bf4
After 16 Bf4
16…Ne4 There is nothing better, e.g. 16…Qa5 17 Bf3 Bd7 (17…0-0 18 Nd5) 18 Rb7 Qd8 and now White can choose between 19 Na4, 19 Ne4 and 19 Rd1, all of them very unpleasant. 17 Nxe4 Qxe4 18 Bf3 Qc4 18…Qa4 19 Qc3 Bd7 20 Qxg7 Rf8 21 Bh5 and f7 will collapse. 19 Bd6!
After 19 Bd6!
19…f5?! Losing by force, as does 19…f6 20 Bh5+ g6 (20…Kf8 21 Rxf6+! Mates) 21 Bxe7 Kxe7 22 Qh6. 19…Ra7 is the best chance, although after 20 Bxe7 Rxe7 21 Qd6 f6 (21…f5 22 Bxc6+ Kf7  23 Rxf5+ exf5 24 Bd5+ Qxd5 25 Qxd5+ Be6 may be Black’s best chance, although this should be a win) 22 Bh5+ g6 23 Rxf6! Qd5 (23…gxh5 24 Rb8 mates, while 23…Rf7 24 Rxf7 Kxf7 27 Qc7+ Kf6 26 Re1! gives White a winning attack) 24 Qb8 Qd7 (or 24…Qd8 25 Bf3 Rc7+ 26 Qb2! Rg8 27 Qe5 with crushing pressure) 25 Bf3 Rf7 26 Rxf7 Kxf7 27 Qf4+ Kg8 28 Rd1 Qe7 29 Qe5. White has a paralyzing bind. 20 Rfd1 Ra7 20…Bxd6 21 Qxd6 Kf7 22 Qc7+ Kf6 23 Rb6! Qc5 24 Rxc6 Qa7 25 Qd6 followed by 26 Rc7 wins. 21 Rb4 Qxa2 22 Bxe7 Kxe7 23 Qd4 1-0 The fork of a7 and g7 wins a rook.
